Kamtchatka: in the Land of the Big Raven
The indigenous people of Kamchatka – Koryaks, Itelmens and Chuks – have like the Indians of North America – gone through a long history of colonialism. 300 years ago Kamchatka was "annexed” to Russia. The end of the Soviet Union plunged the indigenous people into bitter poverty. At the same time however initiatives have been established for restoring and bringing back to life the language, customs and the traditional economy. Tjan Zaotschnaya, herself an Itelmen from Kamchatka, reports on the life and culture of the indigenous people of the peninsular.
