Protesttext: Sámi culture and livelihood threatened by logging activities

Dear Prime Minister,

With concern I have learned about the logging conflict in the traditional territory of the Sámi indigenous people in the Inari region in Northern Finland. The environment, traditional culture and livelihood of the Sámi are threatened by massive logging. In 2005, the logging of old forests has reached such proportions that if nothing is done immediately, traditional reindeer herding and thus a central part of Sámi traditional culture will disappear.

I am surprised that the Finnish government is practising its logging activities without taking the special cultural and economical needs and interests of its indigenous inhabitants into account. As a democratic European state that will assume EU-presidency soon, your country could set a good example in its respect to its indigenous minority. The United Nations have on several occasions criticized Finland for violating Sámi land rights and endangering the entire culture. Beside that, the Finnish Ombudsman against Discrimination has recently stated that failure to protect the Sámi reindeer herding rights constitutes discrimination in their work-life.

I urge Finland to solve the conflict about the forms of forest use in a way that officially respects the Sámi land rights. This includes the signing and ratification by the Finnish state of the ILO convention 169, the only international norm to protect indigenous peoples’ rights.

I appreciate your decision to stop logging activities in Nellim some months ago, and hope you will endorse a final decision to permanently protect the forests of Nellim. As it is urgent to take immediate action to protect the rights of the Sámi indigenous people, I ask you earnestly to take proper consideration of their land rights and stop the destruction of the forests in Northern Finland.
