97 percent of the approximately 6.5 million inhabitants of Libya are Berbers and Arabs – culturally as well as regarding their mother tongue. The Tuareg, who belong to the Berbers, live in the west of the country, while the south is mainly inhabited by the Toubou. Libya is a Muslim country, and 97 percent of the population are Sunni Muslims. There are more than 70,000 Christians living there – mainly Copts and Greek Orthodox Christians.
