25 years after the genocide of Srebrenica (July 11)

Invitation: Commemoration and wreath-laying ceremony at the Neue Wache

On Friday, July 10, 2020 (from 11:00 to about 12:30) at the Neue Wache, Unter den Linden 4, Berlin

The commemoration will begin with interreligious prayers led by Meho Travljanin of the congregation of Bosniaks, Pastor Corinna Zisselsberger of the Protestant Church of Berlin, Brandenburg and Silesian Upper Lusatia, and Pastor Lutz Nehk, the Representative for Remembrance Culture and Memorial Site Work at the Archdiocese of Berlin.

The silent wreath-laying ceremony at the Käthe Kollwitz Memorial will be followed by speeches by Her Excellency Mrs. Jadranka Winbow, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and MP Michael Brand, spokesperson of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group for human rights and humanitarian aid and member of the STP.

Between the prayers and speeches, a children's choir will sing Bosnian songs of mourning.

According to Jasna Causevic, STP expert on genocide prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, the genocide of Srebrenica was a caesura in European history: "The memory of this terrible event reminds us of our responsibility – again and again: we must stand up for peace and understanding every day, and we must work against the denial of genocide!"

The event is co-organized by the Islamic Cultural Center in Berlin and the association (e.V.) Southeast Culture.

About a week ago, the STP published a documentary on Srebrenica and the 25 years after the genocide, emphasizing that children and women are now marginalized and traumatized once again. The documentary covers a quarter of a century of suffering that the survivors had to endure since 1995. The documentation can be downloaded here.
