An appeal to Syrian people living in Germany

International Commission for Missing Persons encourages Syrian people to report missing family members (Press Release)

The Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) appeals to Syrian people living in Germany to support the "International Commission for Missing Persons" (ICMP) in its work. A team that is responsible for the Middle East and northern Africa – and, thus, also for Syria – will be visiting several German cities in the period from August 5 to 20, 2021. The experts will collect blood samples from Syrian people and gather data on family members who went missing during the civil war in Syria. Thus, the ICMP is hoping to find further missing persons. The team will visit Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen, Cologne, Hanover, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Munich, Dresden, Leipzig, and Rendsburg.

In Syria, where a civil war has been raging for the past ten years, the ICMP has collected information on about 21,000 people who have been reported missing. As hundreds of thousands of people from Syria have found refuge in Germany, the team is hoping to make a significant contribution to the identification process – and to and give countless families certainty about the whereabouts of their loved ones. Thus, we would like to encourage everyone to share this appeal.

The ICMP was founded in Sarajevo in 1996, during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the initiative of US President Bill Clinton. Today, its headquarters is located in The Hague. The organization aims to cooperate with governments in order to find people who went missing due to natural disasters, conflicts, or civil wars. Its work is funded by grants, donations, and contributions from various countries.

Please feel free to ask us for more details or to establish contact with the team of the ICMP.
