Film screening and discussion in Berlin (May 5)
The struggle of the Indigenous Kukama women to save the Marañon River in Peru
For the Indigenous Kukama in Peru, the river is not just a body of water, but a living being. It provides them with food, and it absorbs their tears and their laughter. The documentary Karuaras – die Menschen des Flusses (Kaurara – People of the River) focuses on this deep connection and on the threats they are facing, as oil leaks are hazardous to the ecological balance of the Río Marañon. Now, the Kukama women are going to court to try and have the river recognized as a legal subject. You are cordially invited to the screening of the documentary.
Monday, May 5, 2025,
starting at 6:30 pm
at the Haus der Spore Initiative, Hermannstraße 86, Berlin-Neukölln.
Admission is free.
The event is organized by the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) in cooperation with the Informationsstelle Peru e.V., FDCL, and LAF Berlin – in the scope of the initiative “Berlin aktiv im Klima-Bündnis”.
The screening will be followed by a discussion on the documentary with Celia Fasabi Pizango (of the association of the Indigenous Kukama women) and Miriam Torres López (of the Forum Solidaridad Perú), as an opportunity to clarify questions on the Indigenous cosmovision of the river and the concepts of “rights of nature” and “legal recognition of nature”. The discussion will be moderated by María Ángela Torres-Kremers (Lateinamerika-Forum Berlin e.V.).
