G20: Human rights activists support Indian resistance in Hamburg

The Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) is organizing two colorful human rights campaigns during the G-20 summit in Hamburg to demand US President Donald Trump to stop his climate and energy policy. The human rights organization wants to support the protest of the Native Americans who are currently living in fear that their drinking water might be contaminated due to leaks in gigantic oil pipelines – and who are against an increased production of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, as well as Uranium on their ancestral territories. In the United States, the indigenous movement of the Water Protectors is protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which leads across the territory of the Standing Rock Sioux in North Dakota.

“In the scope of Donald Trump’s dangerous climate and energy, the rights of the Native Americans are being trampled underfoot”, the STP criticizes. “They will be the first victims of his policy, which focuses on short-term profit alone. Trump is relying on coal, petroleum, and Uranium. These raw materials are not only problematic with regard to climate change, but large parts of the material reserves are also located in or near Native American reservations. The production of the raw materials is destroying the environment and is a threat to all of Mother Earth. We are saying ‘Make Native America great again!’ After all, Donald Trump’s politics are to be seen as a step backward in history, by at least a generation – to the detriment of the United States… and to the rest of the world!”
