Migration Summit

“No politics on the backs of the victims of Islamism”

On the occasion of the upcoming Migration Summit between the German state, the federal states, and the CDU/CSU Union, the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) warned against further ill-considered and populist decisions. “The ‘traffic light coalition’ and the CDU/CSU are using the current debate on deportations as a red herring. Instead of focusing on the problem of Islamism and the rise of political Islam, deals have been and are being made with Islamist governments as well as Islamist militias and other groups,” criticized Dr. Kamal Sido, the STP’s Middle East Consultant.

“Chancellor Olaf Scholz should disclose what concessions were made to the Taliban to allow for deportations of Afghan criminals,” the human rights activist demanded. “Following the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony, there is no need for further populist demands and statements. Now, the governing parties, but especially the CDU/CSU opposition, must address their own foreign policy mistakes – which contributed to the rise of Islamism and forced many members of religious and ethnic minorities to flee,” the Middle East expert stated.

“It is irresponsible to treat Islamists as partners for decades – and then, for electoral reasons, to make politics at the expense of the victims of Islamism. This includes religious and ethnic minorities such as the Christians, Mandaeans, Baha‘i, Hazara, Alevis, Druze, Jews, Copts, but also Muslims and especially women. They are dependent on support and protection by Germany,” the human rights activist emphasized. Instead, Muslims such as the Kurds in Syria, who are trying to oppose and fight not only IS but all forms of radical Islam every day – are being left in the lurch by Germany and other EU governments.

“Now, the ‘traffic-light coalition’, but also the CDU/CSU, must agree on a new strategy towards dealing with Islamic countries in order to combat Islamism. Germany must demand its political partners to respect human, minority, and women’s rights – and also to stop resolving political conflicts by means of armed force. At the same time, it should be disclosed whether Germany is co-financing Islamist groups in other countries,” Sido demanded. As early as in October 2023, the STP had called on the party-affiliated foundations Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (CDU), Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (SPD), Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung (B90/Greens), Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung (FDP), Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung (CSU), as well as the responsible offices in the Federal Foreign Office to disclose whether and which Islamist groups they were funding. To this day, this inquiry has not been answered.
