Invitation to a press conference with representatives of Sudanese civil society (April 15)

“Raw materials out, weapons in” – Stop financing the war in Sudan!

On the third anniversary of the outbreak of war in Sudan and ahead of the international Sudan Conference in Berlin, Sudanese civil society organizations are hosting a press conference to present demands to European Union decision-makers, national governments, and other participants in the Sudan Conference. The event is organized by the Center for Environmental and Social Studies (CESS Sudan) and other Sudanese civil society organizations and hosted by the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP).

The ongoing war in Sudan is not only one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises but is also sustained by a militarized resource economy. To finance the war, armed actors export high-value resources—primarily gold and gum arabic—into global supply chains in exchange for weapons and military support. This cycle follows the logic of “Resources out, weapons in.” During the press conference, a joint memorandum by Sudanese civil society organizations that has examined these connections will be presented.

Representatives of Sudanese civil society and experts will present concrete policy demands at the press conference. They emphasize that while humanitarian aid pledges are urgently needed, they are not sufficient to end the suffering of the Sudanese population. Addressing the root causes of this humanitarian catastrophe must go hand in hand with efforts to alleviate the immediate suffering of those affected.
