Trump’s expected election victory
Minorities and Indigenous peoples in great concern, deals with dictators expected
Minorities and Indigenous peoples all over the world are deeply concerned about the consequences of Donald Trump’s expected election victory – as the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) reported in Göttingen today. “It is especially the most vulnerable of the vulnerable – members of minority groups, Indigenous peoples, and those affected by war, hunger, and violence – who are concerned about a presidency of Donald Trump, and rightly so: If we look at the situation in Ukraine, and especially of the Roma and the Crimean Tatars there, we have to warn about his policy of making deals with dictators. Indigenous peoples all over the world know that Trump is only interested in exploitation and economic profit. They are already the most affected by the consequences of the climate catastrophe, and they fear further reckless resource extraction practices. Trump has no understanding of the internationally enshrined rights of these peoples,” stated Sarah Reinke, head of human rights work at the STP.
“The people of Kurdistan in the north of Syria are very concerned, too. Although the Biden administration had bowed to aggressor Erdogan and done nothing against its daily attacks on the country, the people fear the unpredictable Trump even more – also because of the possible deals he could make with Erdogan,” stated Dr. Kamal Sido, the STP’s Middle East Consultant.
Laura Mahler, STP expert on Sub-Saharan Africa, warned that a Trump presidency would also be fatal regarding the conflict in Western Sahara: “During his first term in office, Trump had built up close relations with Morocco. In 2020, for example, Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara was recognized. More US support for Morocco will increase the pressure on everyone calling for the independence of Western Sahara.” Also, the already challenging situation there will surely become even worse if the US withdraws from UN dialogues and other multilateral initiatives focusing on the status of Western Sahara.
“Also, Biden’s incredible human rights and foreign policy had played into Trump’s hands. This must be a warning to us in Germany. The German Federal Government must convince the people through consistent and credible action, or even more people will lose confidence in democracy and turn to populists,” Reinke warned.
