Order of Merit for Feryad Fazil Omar

An award for commitment to human rights

The Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) congratulates Feryad Fazil Omar on being awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany – which will be presented to him today, December 21, in Berlin. Mr. Omar is an honorary member of the STP and its former Federal Chairman. “Over decades, Feryad was deeply committed to human rights – as shown by the fact that he served as Federal Chairman of the STP from 2011 to 2017. He was very interested in furthering initiatives to systematically record and conduct research on the Kurdish language. As a longstanding member of our society, he contributed significantly to drawing political attention to the Kurdish question in Germany. Considering his achievements, the Order of Merit is more than deserved. We warmly congratulate him,” stated Roman Kühn, Director of the STP, joyfully.

Feryad Fazil Omar has been a member of the Society for Threatened Peoples since 2003. In 2006, he was appointed honorary member.

Omar is founder and President of the Institute for Kurdish Studies in Berlin. He is especially known for the Kurdish-German dictionary, focusing on the Northern Kurdish language (Kurmanci), which he first published in 1992.
