You are cordially invited:
Sunday, September 22, 2024
starting at 7 pm
at the Kinemathek, Kaiserpassage 6, 76133 Karlsruhe
The screening is organized by the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) in cooperation with the Kinemathek Karlsruhe e.V., and tickets are available via kinemathek-karlsruhe.de/film/yezidian-voices/
The families, the homes, and the future of Aras, Shireen, and Ziyad were destroyed. The film describes how the three of them are now using their past to build a future. The three protagonists talk about what they witnessed – with courage, strength, and self-confidence – to ensure that the genocide will not be forgotten. The film was created in 2023 as a final project for the Master’s course in TV Journalism and Documentary Filmmaking at the Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Germany has a special responsibility for addressing and commemorating the genocide. There are around 200,000 Yezidis living in Germany – the largest Yezidi diaspora community in the world. In January 2023, Germany also officially acknowledged the genocide of the Yezidi people. To date, approximately 2,700 women and children have been captured by IS or have disappeared without a trace. Thus, the Yezidi community speaks of an “ongoing genocide”. The documentary “Yezidian Voices” plays a key role in the process of coming to terms with the past.
