With regard to the escalating conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) calls on the German Federal Government to use its EU Presidency to demand an immediate ceasefire. Further, the German government should clearly criticize its NATO partner Turkey – as Turkey is obviously sending weapons, military advisers, and mercenaries to the embattled region.

"There are reports about mercenaries, especially from Syria, who go from village to village in the South Caucasian war zone, demanding the observance of Islamic Sharia law," reported Dr. Kamal Sido, Middle East Correspondent of the STP. "The Armenian population feels threatened, and we have to take their concerns very seriously. The Islamists have already shown the same behavior in Kurdish villages in Northern Syria.

"For the Armenian population – which already suffered from persecution and genocide in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and 20th century – conflicts in which Turkey is involved are not only about territory: they are existentially threatened," Sido emphasized. "The experiences of ethnic and religious minorities in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq show what Turkey is capable of under the Islamist AKP.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in Great Britain has already reported the first deaths among the Turkish-backed Syrian mercenaries who were sent to Azerbaijan from Afrin and other areas of northern Syria. There are indications that Erdogan's government is also recruiting fighters for the "brother state of Azerbaijan" from among the suffering Syrian refugees in Turkey.

"The German government has always shown understanding for Turkey's alleged security interests in the region of Northern Syria, which has been under attack from Turkey for years. Now, however, the German government must urgently mediate in order to end Erdogan's wars – instead of tolerating this behavior," Sido demanded.
