Conclusion after one year of war in Sudan

Report documents proof of genocide and war crimes

“The genocide against the Masalit in Darfur and the systematic violations of international humanitarian law documented in our report – which we published today, after one year of war in Sudan – are serious crimes under international law,” stated Sarah Reinke, Head of human rights work at the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP), on Friday. “The crimes include ethnically motivated massacres of Masalit people, the bombing of civilian targets, violence against children, the use of rape as a weapon of war, and targeted displacements.” Our report documents the terrible suffering of the people of Sudan. At least 14,000 people have been killed since the war began a year ago, but the actual numbers are probably significantly higher. A total number of 8.6 million people are on the run. “Over the past year, humanitarian aid organizations and human rights activists have been repeating their calls for help and appeals to governments and international bodies. However, there has not been an appropriate response to this day. Once again, the world is turning a blind eye – as it did in the case of the genocide in Darfur around 20 years ago. This inhumane indifference must end immediately,” Reinke said. Thus, the Society for Threatened Peoples emphatically calls on the German Federal Government:
•    to use the upcoming donor conference on Monday (April 15) to make it unmistakably clear that those who are responsible for genocide and war crimes will be prosecuted with the full force of international law. Impunity must be ended.
•    to initiate – together with international partners – a consistent and sustainable process towards a ceasefire, in which the Sudanese civil society must be given a leading role.
•    to advocate for large-scale humanitarian aid, the establishment of humanitarian corridors and demilitarized zones, and full support for Sudanese aid organizations in distributing the aid deliveries.
•    to find an arrangement that sanctions states, companies, and individuals who finance the war or fuel the war with arms supplies.
