On August 25, 2014, during his five-day stay in Hamburg, the Dalai Lama visited the exhibition „Tibet – Nomads in Need“ at the Hamburg Museum of Ethnology – which was co-organized by the Society for Threatened Peoples. During his visit, he was accompanied by STP chairman Feryad Omar, by Wulf Koepke, the director of the museum, as well as other members of the STP and representatives of the German Tibet Initiative (Tibet Initiative Deutschland, TID) including federal Chairman Wolfgang Grader and the head of the regional group in Hamburg, Helmut Steckel.
The exhibition, which was jointly organized by the STP, the TID and the Hamburg Museum of Ethnology, shows about 80 photos, ritual items and objects of everyday life of the Tibetan herdsmen in the Himalayas, while critical texts give an overview of the nomadic people’s problematic political situation. The Chinese central government is trying to force them to settle by the year 2015.
The Dalai Lama thanked us for our support and our efforts to preserve the Tibetan culture heritage and to address the oppressive political situation in his homeland.
The exhibition at the Museum of Ethnology Hamburg can still be visited until November 23, 2014.
