The beginning of the first civil action of Srebrenica survivors against the Netherlands government next Monday at The Hague will be accompanied by the Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) and those affected from the former UN protected zone in East Bosnia with a vigil. „The fate of family members of the plaintiffs stands for that of thousands of inhabitants of Srebrenica”, said the human rights organisation. „The government of the Netherlands and the international community must recognize their responsibility for the victims of this genocide, who laid their lives in the hands of the peacekeepers and were still given up to the Serb troops under General Ratko Mladic.”
It is over five years now since the family (of the electrician Rizo Mustafic, who was murdered in Srebrenica, and Hasan Nuhanovic filed an action at the District Court at The Hague. The parents and the younger brother of Nuhanovic, who worked for the UN as a translator, had sought refuge in an office of the peacekeepers. They were sent away after one night by a UN commander whom they knew personally, although Serb troops only a few yards away were already in the process of murdering and raping. All three were killed. So far however only the remains of the father have been found in a mass grave and identified.
