Under the pretext of taking revenge on rebellious Alawite Assad supporters, the Islamist regime in Damascus launched a large-scale, coordinated attack on the Alawite civilian population on the Syrian Mediterranean coast on March 7, 2025. According to the STP, this was an attempted genocide.
Prof. Dr. Jens Kreinath will report on the current situation of Alawites and other religious minorities in Syria. He is a German theologian, religious scholar, and social and cultural anthropologist. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at Wichita State University in Kansas, USA. His research to date has focused on the veneration of saints, interreligious relations—for example, between Muslims and Christians at shared pilgrimage sites in Hatay—and religious minorities, particularly the Alawites.
Dr. Kamal Sido, Middle East consultant at STP, will moderate the information event and the subsequent discussion. He traveled to the affected area one month after the attacks on Syria’s Alawite population began and spoke with numerous survivors. He also visited other minority regions, including the settlement areas of the Druze and Kurdish populations.
Note for editors: Press interviews with Prof. Dr. Jens Kreinath are possible prior to the event from 5 to 6 p.m. We would appreciate a brief confirmation by phone at 0173/67 33 980.
