The G8 states must at their coming summit meeting at Hokkaido in Japan (7th – 9th July) place the genocide in Darfur on the agenda and in a binding statement pass an intensification of the measures for ending the crimes in Western Sudan . This demand is made by the world-wide coalition „Globe for Darfur „. On Thursday the Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) sent a corresponding appeal to Bundeskanzler Angela Merkel. It is signed by 50 human rights and Darfur organisations, among them being the American Jewish World Service, Stop Genocide Now, Save Darfur and the GfbV International, as well as 12, 450 individual persons. A letter with the same content was sent to the heads of government of France, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Japan, Canada and the USA. SIGN THE PETITION
In the appeal the wealthiest industrial nations of the world are called on to ensure that the international peace-keeping force UNAMID receives the necessary equipment and is large enough to provide effective protection for the civilian population in Darfur . Beyond this they must make sure that the armistice is kept, international deliveries of arms are condemned and the war criminals arrested and punished. The G8 states must also put forward a concrete plan as to how they can themselves actively support the peace process in Darfur .
