The Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) charged the G-8 states on Friday with failing in the Somalia crisis, the worst humanitarian disaster in Africa . „If the G-8 states do not at last take more concrete measures hundreds of thousands will be threatened with starvation“, warned the GfbV Africa consultant, Ulrich Delius. Since there was a steady increase in the number of attacks on Somali and international aid-workers, the aid organisations have had to reduce their work. „By the end of the year there will be instead of 2.5 million up to 3.5 million Somalis suffering and dependent on aid if the international community remains so passive.“
Delius called for the G-8 states to press urgently for a rapid withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops, who are so hated in Somalia , and support peace with financial incentives as well. Since the invasion by Ethiopia in December 2006 more than 8,000 people have been killed, and in the first six months of this year alone there were 2.136 victims. The humanitarian situation of the people is steadily deteriorating. Only 25 percent of the people are receiving regular medical attention, only 29 percent have running water and less than 30 percent of the children go to primary school. The wealthiest countries of the world cannot simply ignore such dreadful conditions.
Since the USA encouraged the invasion of Ethiopian troops and thus contributed to the escalation of the war the G-8 states should now accept their responsibility and at last take constructive measures to solve the Somalia crisis. Germany , France and Great Britain with their unconditional support of the Somali provisional government, which now controls no more than 15 percent of the country, have so far made no contribution.
On 9^th June 2008 a truce was agreed between the provisional government of Somalia and moderate Muslim leaders. This has however been broken on several occasions. In the past seven days at least 53 people have been killed in armed conflicts between Somali security forces, the Ethiopian army and radical Muslim forces. Quite regardless of the civilian population all sides fire at each other with rockets.
