The Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) appealed on Tuesday to the German Prime Minister, Angela Merkel, and the President, Horst Köhler, to boycott the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games in Peking. „If German politicians did not appear at the opening celebrations they would set a clear signal for the maintenance of international standards in matters of human rights and international law. The sportsmen and women would not be affected”, said the GfbV General Secretary, Tilman Zülch.
After the bloody crushing of the unrest in Tibet the international community cannot behave as though nothing had happened. If the politicians stayed away the course of the Olympic Games would not be obstructed and the athletes, who have trained for years for this contest, would not be the ones to suffer.
