In the light of the Kurdish demonstrations announced for tomorrow, Friday, 21 April 2006, the Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) has asked all EU embassies in Damascus to take especial care. The human rights organisation fears that Syrian security forces will this time also take systematic measures against peaceful participants in the demonstration. The large Kurdish parties in Syria – Yekiti, Azadi and the so-called Movement for a Future of the Kurds – have called out to demonstrations in the town of Qamishi because there on Friday morning 47 Kurds are to appear before a military court. The accused were arrested on 06 June 2005 because they had demonstrated against the murder of their spiritual leader Sheik Mashuk Al Khaznawi. Sheik Khaznawi was snatched from a restaurant in Damascus on 10 May 2005 and members of the family report that he was admitted to hospital almost unconscious two weeks later, where he died a few days later. The Syrian secret service is held responsible for his death. . The religious leader was seen as a liberal advocate of the rights of Kurds. There are today some two million Syrian Kurds living in the north of Syria in the egion of Afri –near the Turkish town of Iskenderun/Alexandrette – as far as Quamishli on the Iraqi border, making up about twelve percent of the population.
