Although the volume of trade with China is growing strongly, the democratic change in the People’s Republic, which was prophesied years ago, has not taken place. The human rights of Tibetans, Uigurs, Mongols, Christians, supporters of the Falun Gong meditation movement and the movement for democracy are being infringed increasingly. The security of Taiwan also, of the democratic China, is being massively threatened. Following the election of Germany onto the new UN Human Rights Council we now call upon the German government to make human rights the pivot of German China policies. If it is not to be too late for the survival of Tibet the German government must at long last, ten years after the internationally renowned Tibet resolution of the German parliament, begin with the implementation of the demands of the parliamentarians which are still relevant today. We appeal therefore to the Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to stand up on her forthcoming visit to China on 21st May for the beginning of a credible dialogue between the Chinese leadership and Tibet’s Dalai Lama and for a stop to the settling of Han Chinese in Tibet. The Chancellor must also call for an end to the arbitrary arrests, executions and religious persecution of Muslim Uigurs. The Uigur language must no longer be prejudiced in favour of Chinese, for otherwise the traditional Uigur culture will die out. China’s wish for a removal of the EU arms embargo should be steadfastly refused by the German Chancellor, since new shipments of arms mean a threat for peace in East Asia and the security of Taiwan.
