In the light of the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the civil war in Darfur (26th February) the Society for threatened Peoples (GfbV) will with an oversized hour-glass be drawing attention to the fact that time is running out for the people in West Sudan. At the same time the GfbV will be calling on the German government to finally take the initiative and push for immediate measures inside the EU to put an end to the genocide in Darfur.
„Europe must no longer cover up its inactivity, but must at last set serious signs. For the genocide in Darfur is continuing, week by week people are being uprooted and fewer and fewer of those in distress can be supplied with food.. That must not make us indifferent”. For this reason the GfbV is organising the human right campaign. For four years the Sudanese leaders have been systematically violating humanitarian international law and basic international human rights conventions without let or hindrance. There are indeed concrete suggestions for sanctions against the Sudanese government, but the international community of states has taken no action. It is only against four persons, two of them being rebel leaders that sanctions have been imposed by the UN.
The situation of the civilian population in Darfur is worse than ever before. The humanitarian aid for three million people is threatened with being stopped, since aid workers are being attacked with increasing frequency and hindered in their work. Up to 400,000 people have fallen victim to the genocide since 3003. More than 2.5 million people have been driven out.
