Auf dem Weltklimagipfel in Kopenhagen im Dezember 2009 ließ sich Äthiopiens Premierminister Meles Zenawi noch als Retter Afrikas feiern. Doch im eigenen Land regiert er mit eiserner Hand und duldet keine Opposition, besonders nicht vor den Parlamentswahlen, bei denen er am 23. Mai 2010 erneut für fünf Jahre im Amt bestätigt werden möchte. Dies bekam auch die Fernsehjournalistin Lelise Wadajo Fida zu spüren. Die Reporterin vom Volk der Oromo wurde Ende April zu zehn Jahren Haft verurteilt. Sie ist eine von hunderten Oromo, die in den letzten zwei Jahren willkürlich aufgrund ihrer ethnischen Abstammung festgenommen wurde. Auch Birtukan Mideksa; die berühmteste Oppositionspolitikerin, wird die Wahlen als Gefangene erleben. Die frühere Richterin muss eine lebenslange Haftstrafe verbüßen.

Am 9. Mai 2010 wurden im Iran fünf Kurden (Ferzad Kemanger, Ferhad Wekili, Ali Heyderiyan, Mahdi Islamian und Schirin Elmholi) hingerichtet. Daraufhin kam es in den mehrheitlich von Kurden besiedelten Gebieten zu Protesten. Die Proteste weiteten sich am 15. Mai 2010 zu einem Generalstreik aus. Insbesondere in den Städten Mahabad, Seqiz, Kamyaran, Qurwe, Bane, Meriwan, Şino, Diwandere, Bokan, Nexede, Bicar, Mako und Sine blieben alle Geschäfte geschlossen. Die kurdischen Studierenden boykottierten den Unterricht.

The nomadic people of the Hadzabe are under threat. In modern Tanzanian society their way of life is seen as sub-human and worthless – a view with disastrous consequences. Their traditional land is being distributed to farming and hunting tourism businesses, which encroach upon their land and so endanger their nomadic culture. Please support our appeal to Mizengo Pinda, the Prime Minister of Tanzania, to protect the Hadzabe.

Das Nomadenvolk der Hadzabe (Singular: Hadza) ist bedroht. In der modernen tansanischen Gesellschaft wird ihre Lebensweise als „menschenunwürdig“ verachtet – mit verheerenden Konsequenzen: Ihr traditionelles Land wird von der Regierung Tansanias an Farmer und Jagdtourismusunternehmen verschachert, die die Hadzabe von ihrem Land vertreiben und so ihre nomadische Kultur gefährden. A Turkish court sentenced to three years imprisonment the very well-known Kurdish politician and human rights activist Leyla Zana on 8th April 2010 in Diyarbakir for „disseminating terrorist propaganda”. This is the punishment for Leyla Zana having emphasised at a conference in London in 2008 in part of her speech the role of the head of the PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, who is in prison, as „a figure with whom many Kurds in Turkey identify”. Ms. Zana and her lawyer were not present when the sentence was pronounced.

Die bekannteste kurdische Politikerin und Menschenrechtlerin Leyla Zana ist erneut zu einer zehnjährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt worden. In einem Wiederaufnahmeverfahren bestätigte ein Gericht im kurdischen südostanatolischen Diyarbakir am 24.05. 2012 eine frühere Entscheidung, nach der Zana wegen „Verbreitung terroristischer Propaganda“zehn Jahre ins Gefängnis soll.

Stolz präsentiert die Türkei Istanbul und somit eigentlich auch das ehrwürdige christliche Konstantinopel als „Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2010“. Die Türkei gilt als aufstrebende Wirtschaftsnation im Nahen Osten, die immer engere Kontakte zu ihren Nachbarn knüpft und so ihren Einfluss in der Region verstärkt. Gleichzeitig strebt sie auch in die Europäische Union, und die wachsende türkische Minderheit gewinnt in Deutschland ständig an Gewicht.

In the fall and winter of 2009 violence broke out again against the Guaraní-Kaiowá people in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. In 2007 an agreement was reached among the Indian Protection Agency, FUNAI, the Justice Minister, and the General Attorney of Brazil about the boundaries and recognition of 36 Indian territories. However, up until now the policy is still not completely implemented. Please appeal to the Justice Minister of Brazil Exmo. Sr. Tarso Genro, for a speedy implementation of the policy of recognition of Indian land rights.

The visa requirements for travel in the Schengen Zone fort he citizens of Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia have been lifted at the beginnign of 2010 upon the recomendation of the European Commision. Bosnian Serbs are able to benefit from this arrangement as they have dual citizenship. The same privilege has been enjoyed for years by Bosnian Croats. It is only the Bosnian Muslims who are not able to travel freely. As victims of the 1992-1995 genocide they are being punished twice over. Bosniaks who survived the massacres, deportations, rape and concentration camps are not even able to travel to the Hague for the trial of the Serb war criminal Radovan Karadzic. The genocide on the Bosnian Muslims, the displacement of thousands of people and the accompanning ethnic division Bosnia and Herzegovina has been cemented subsequently through the European Union.
