The GfbV has also joined together in a new „Climate Alliance” with over 40 organisations to stop the climate change. Right up to date: Appeal to the G8 Please support our appeal to the G8, the leading industrial nations, which will be meeting in June 2007 with a German chair in Heiligendamm. When measures to cope with the climate change are being discussed – the main cause of which are the industrial nations! – its first victims, the indigenous peoples, must not be forgotten!
The indigenous peoples of the earth have cared for and protected our environment and particularly the climatically sensitive regions for centuries. But now they need our protection: their survival is massively threatened by the increasing climate change and the concomitant ruthless rape of nature and its resources by the industrial nations.
In the coming months we shall be asking you in many individual campaigns to help us – not only in Germany, but also in other countries, for the new climate change campaign will be carried by the entire GfbV-International.
In Germany the GfbV has joined together in the new climate alliance with over 40 organisations (churches, environment associations and development organisations) to stop the climate change. Companies, trades unions and other organisations are warmly invited to join the alliance!
Present and planned campaigns
INTERNATIONAL G8 Appeal
The leading industrial nations are the main contributors to the destruction of the means of life of the indigenous communities throughout the world – they must take over responsibility for a rapid and radical change in energy policies!
On the Appeal
EU: Climate Appeal to the German presidency of the EU Council
The Climate Appeal of CAMPACT will be officially sponsored by the GfbV: Europe must take the lead internationally in the protection of the climate! On the ClimateChange
INDONESIA: Papua tribes are to be removed for oil palm plantations
The demand for palm oil is growing throughout the world – it is supposed to calm the climate conscience. So Indonesia intends to increase its production of palm oil 43-fold and is planning to burn down 20 million hectares of forest. This means that several hundred Papua tribes in the west of the island of New-Guinea will lose their means of life. Germany is the fourth largest importer of palm oil in the world. We appeal to the Federal Minister of the Environment, Sigmar Gabriel, to use in government subsidised power-stations, not palm oil, but regenerative fuels produced domestically.

BRAZIL: No! to the destruction of the land of the Indians through the boom of bio-fuels!
Brazil is the largest exporter in the world of ethanol, which is obtained from sugar-cane. The powerful agricultural lobby would like to extend the sugar-cane plantations in the coming years from 180,000 hectares to 795,000 hectares. The Guarani Indians, who are now living in great misery, fear for their land. (in preparation)
AFRICA: Nomadic tribes are faced with extinction
Seven years of drought and torrential rains have destroyed the pasture-lands in the Sahel and on Kilimanjaro. Many nomadic tribes like the Masai and Tuareg are faced with extinction. We want to fight with them for special development programmes to prevent their culture from extinction. (in preparation)
RUSSIA: The reindeer culture of the Nenets seems doomed
17,000 tons of building materials are at present being transported to the Yamal Peninsula in the Russian Kara Sea. The gas monopolist Gasprom has stated that without the gas reserves there demand can no longer be satisfied. But the construction of the planned pipeline will mean the end of the reindeer culture of the approximately 4,700 Nenets, who are semi-nomads. The GfbV intends to make sure that the demands of the Nenets for compensation and participation be heard. (in preparation)
AUSTRIA: OMV Campaign
The OMV intends to extend its activities in Russia very considerably in the next few years. We want to call on the OMV, which calls itself „the leading mineral oil and natural gas company in Central Europe” to set a good example on the international scene and to involve the indigenous peoples in all decisions which are relevant to them. (in preparation) These and many other campaigns you will find in the coming months on our new action platform /Climate change and indigenous peoples/. Please join us!
