The Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) has been shocked to hear that a 61-year old Bosnian refugee returning home was murdered on Thursday in the town of Srebrenica. She was killed with a blunt instrument and robbed. The dead woman is a relative of the coordinator working in the East Bosnian town and had returned a short time ago to Srebrenica. There she was living alone near the memorial centre set up for those murdered in July 1995 by Serb troops in the then UN protected area. The 61-year old had at that time lost all her male relatives and was expelled. „This second murder of a returning refugee frightens thousands of others and takes from them the courage to make a fresh start in their hometowns”, said the GfbV General Secretary, Tilman Zülch on Friday. It is about one year ago that a returned refugee was murdered in the village of Pecista. She was killed by the explosion of a hidden hand-grenade. In spite of many appeals from survivors of the genocide, police, administration and the courts of the Republika Srpska, which was itself in many cases involved in the crimes of the past, has done nothing to clear up this crime. About 4,500 Bosnian refugees have returned to the 59 villages in the Srebrenica region and to the city. „While Srebrenica has become throughout the world a synonym for genocide the international institutions and large relief organisations have left the city on the Drina”, said Zülch. The widows and orphans who have returned are left to their own devices and have to make sure that they secure their survival with hard work by the most primitive farming. The GfbV has on many occasions appealed to the German government, the EU and the USA to rescind the arbitrary division of Bosnia and to grant the region of Srebrenica self-government inside the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
